நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்தே – அதை
      நலங்கெடப் புழுதியில் எறிவதுண்டோ?
சொல்லடி சிவசக்தி – எனைச்
      சுடர்மிகும் அறிவுடன் படைத்துவிட்டாய்.
வல்லமை தாராயோ, இந்த
      மாநிலம் பயனுற வாழ்வதற்கே?
சொல்லடி, சிவசக்தி! நிலச்
      சுமையென வாழ்ந்திடப் புரிகுவையோ? 1

விசையுறு பந்தினைப்போல் – உள்ளம்
      வேண்டிய படிசெலும் உடல்கேட்டேன்,
நசையறு மனங்கேட்டேன் – நித்தம்
      நவமெனச் சுடர்தரும் உயிர்கேட்டேன்,
தசையினைத் தீச்சுடினும் – சிவ
      சக்தியைப் பாடும்நல் அகங்கேட்டேன்,
அசைவறு மதிகேட்டேன், இவை
      அருள்வதில் உனக்கெதுந் தடையுளதோ? 2

An Exquisite Veena

Having crafted an exquisite Veena
Would anyone throw it in the dust, gracelessly?
Tell me Shivashakti,
You were the one who created me with the flame of wisdom.
Won’t you give me the strength
To live a life that is fruitful to this land?
Tell me Shivashakti,
Will you consign me to live
As a burden on the earth? 1

Like a swiftly thrown ball
A body ready to spring on brain’s command
I ask for.
Spotless mind I ask for.
A life born anew day by day I ask for.
A noble heart that sings praises of Shakti
Even when the flesh is on fire
This I ask for.
Unshakable intellect I ask for.
Would you not bestow these, O Mother? 2

பல்லவி

ஐய பேரிகை கொட்டடா!-கொட்டடா
ஐய பேரிகை கொட்டடா!

சரணங்கள்

1. பயமெனும் பேய்தனை யடித்தோம்-பொய்ம்மைப்
      பாம்பைப் பிளந்துயிரைக் குடித்தோம்;
வியனுல கனைத்தையும் அமுதென நுகரும்
      வேத வாழ்வினைக் கைப் பிடித்தோம் (ஐயபேரிகை)

2. இரவியினொளியிடைக் குளித்தோம்-ஒளி
      இன்னமு தினையுண்டு களித்தோம்;
கரவினில் வந்துயிர்க் குலத்தினை யழிக்கும்
      காலன் நடுநடுங்க விழித்தோம். (ஐய பேரிகை)

3. காக்கை குருவி எங்கள் ஜாதி-நீள்
      கடலும் மலையும் எங்கள் கூட்டம்;
நோக்குந் திசையெலாம் நாமன்றி வேறில்லை;

Beat the drums of Victory, my friend,
Beat it.

1. We beat to death a ghost called fear,
We tore the snake of falsehoold into pieces.
We handed ourselves to the Vedic life,
which sees the Immortal in the
whole of universe.

2. We bathed with the lustre of the shining sun,
We relished the sweet-nector of his blessed light.
We made him tremble at our sight, the Death,
who comes in hiding to steal the lives.

3. Crows and sparrows are of our caste,
Oceans and mountains are of our crowd.
On all sides we look around
it’s only Us and nothing else.
Look, look and dance in joy.
