Law panel starts fresh consultation on Uniform Civil Code, seeks public feedback

The Law Commission of India has initiated fresh consultation process on the Uniform Civil Code. The 22nd Law Commission of India has decided to solicit views and ideas of the public at large and recognized religious organizations about the Uniform Civil Code.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the law panel said, “Initially, the 21st Law Commission of India had examined the subject on Uniform Civil Code and solicited the views of all the stakeholders through its appeal along with a questionnaire dated October 7, 2016 and further public appeals/notices dated March 19, 2018 and March 27, 2018, and April 10, 2018.”
The commission said it had received overwhelming responses and the 21st Law Commission issued the consultation paper on “Reforms of Family Law” on August 31, 2018.
The law panel said since more than three years have passed since the consultation paper was issued, and keeping in mind the relevance and importance of the subject and also the various Court orders on the subject, the 22nd Law Commission of India considered it expedient to initiate fresh consultation on the subject.
WHAT IS UNIFORM CIVIL CODE?
The Uniform Civil Code proposes to introduce personal laws that would apply to all citizens equally, irrespective of their religion, gender, caste, etc. The Uniform Civil Code essentially refers to a common set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
At present, the personal laws of various communities are largely governed by their religion.

Law panel extends date for sharing feedback on Uniform Civil Code till July 28

The 22nd Law Commission of India on Friday extended the deadline for the public and organisations to send their feedback on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by July 28.
In response to requests received from various sources, an extension of two weeks has been granted for the submission of comments, views, and suggestions, as per a notice released by the law panel.
“The Law Commission values the input of all stakeholders and aims to create an inclusive environment that encourages active engagement. We encourage all interested parties to utilise this extended timeframe to contribute their valuable ideas and expertise,” reads the notice.
The notice also stated, “Any interested individual, institution or organisation may furnish comments on the UCC till July 28 on the commission’s website.”
After the law panel requested responses from organisations and the public on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on June 14, the original one-month deadline for submitting responses expired on Friday. Subsequently, the deadline was extended.
